South Korea made a historic decision and banned dog meat. Why did Koreans decide to abandon a centuries-old tradition?

Most Koreans haven’t eaten dog meat for a long time. A Gallup Korea poll in 2022 found that nearly two-thirds of respondents were against eating dog meat, and only eight per cent said they had eaten it within a year. In 2015, that figure was 27 per cent. The number of Koreans who have a dog living at home has also risen sharply, from just 16 per cent in 2010 to 25 per cent in 2022.

On Monday, Jan. 8, the Seoul-based Animal Welfare Awareness, Research and Education research centre released the results of a survey showing that 94 percent of Koreans have not eaten dog meat once in the past year, and 93 percent said they never intend to eat it again.
