Experts interviewed by The Washington Post (WP) expressed concern over the seizure of a section of the federal border by the Texas authorities. The conflict with Washington has arisen against the background of the migration crisis.
The newspaper’s interlocutors found it difficult to recall any recent similar case when the authorities of a particular state blocked the federal government’s access to the territory under its jurisdiction.
Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, noted that there have been cases where states have refused to help federal authorities enforce immigration laws. He warned that the Texas governor’s move “increases the risk of an armed confrontation” between border agents and the National Guard “if someone does something stupid.”
