South Korea made a historic decision and banned dog meat. Why did Koreans decide to abandon a centuries-old tradition?

One of the current Korean president’s campaign promises was to ban the breeding of dogs for meat
First Lady Kim Keong-hee was one of the first to openly support the new law. According to her, current President Yoon Seok-yeol promised to ban the breeding of dogs for meat during his election campaign.

Kim is considered one of the main activists for banning the breeding of dogs for meat in the country. She is known to be an animal lover: the president and first lady have six dogs and eight cats at home. According to media reports, the couple adopted several animals from shelters.

In November, parliamentarian Yoo Eui-Dong, who is in charge of the ruling People’s Power Party’s political policy, linked the bill to the increasing number of pets among Koreans and the fact that the practice is detrimental to the country’s image.
